Marble in Toa Payoh homes

Toa Payoh has older HDB estates, small freehold condos along Boon Teck and Kim Keat, and newer condos at Woodleigh, Potong Pasir and Bidadari. Older Toa Payoh flats and the 1980s and 1990s condos around Balestier and Boon Teck often have crazy-paving marble chips or marble tiles in the living room. They respond very well to honing and polishing. Newer Woodleigh and Bidadari condos usually have large-format marble or porcelain in the living areas, so we check the material first.

Local tip: In older flats, the kitchen doorway and the area around the toilet are where etching and yellowing usually start. Ask us to look at those first.

About Toa Payoh

Toa Payoh means 'big swamp' in Hokkien. The swampland was cleared in the 1960s to build Singapore's second satellite town, after Queenstown.

Its first flats were ready in the late 1960s. Queen Elizabeth II toured the town in 1972, and Toa Payoh MRT opened in 1987 on the first stretch of the MRT network.

Newer private homes have gone up around Woodleigh, Potong Pasir and the Bidadari estate, while the Balestier and Boon Teck side has many small freehold condos from the 1980s and 1990s.
